Fast-growing electric vehicles sector leads to spike in demand for Trenches Law’s wayleave expertise

Established telecoms law specialist Trenches Law is now providing vital wayleave services to facilitate the smooth roll-out and rapid expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charge point installations.

OFGEM figures have stated that demand for electric cars is set to rise by 24% within the next five years – meaning 18 million vehicles will be on the road by 2030 – as the nation drives towards its legal obligation of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The Department for Transport’s ‘Road to Zero’ has since revealed a £400 million Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund which is available to prioritise installations. Additionally, the Government has committed to phasing out new sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 and hybrids by 2035.

An area that will be vital in making these next steps a reality for the UK is ensuring the wayleave application process runs as smoothly as possible so that build projects can take place legally, accurately, and swiftly.

Having established itself as a wayleave specialist, Trenches Law is a trusted partner for some of the UK’s largest telecoms operators – such as WightFibre, toob, Ogi and ITS – as well as wholesalers, and resellers as they roll-out their complex network builds.

And following an exceptional period of growth – in which the Hampshire-headquartered firm recruited 20 specialists over a three-month period and recorded a 220% increase in revenue following a successful wayleave automation launch – Trenches Law has now unveiled a service specifically for commercial clients to help negotiate agreements at pace and progress the installation of EV charge points.

Speaking about the steps to a net zero future and the supportive, eco-conscious role Trenches Law will play, Managing Director and co-founder Sharon McDermott said: “Wayleaves are often an incredibly complex and time-consuming process, and there’s no question that if the EV sector is to grow at the speed it needs to, these agreements must be in place.

“We have a collective responsibility to care for our environment and we’re determined to utilise our knowledge to support landowners, housing associations, local authorities, EV providers and organisations with fleet vehicles to complete applications and drive towards a greener future.”

Having launched its intuitive automated wayleave solution in September 2020, Trenches Law holds training sessions to help companies increase their knowledge in this niche area – with attendees to date including Swish Fibre, Airband, and Converged, to name a few.

The team also provides commercial legal counsel – including contract negotiations, drafting agreements, and applying for Code powers – alongside critical telecoms advice.
